Hearts of Pine Shine in First International “Friendly” Against Halifax

This August, the Hearts of Pine welcomed the Halifax Wanderers to Fitzpatrick Stadium for their first international friendly, and the result was everything fans could have hoped for a thrilling 2–1 victory in front of a packed house.

Electric from the start

From the start, the energy was electric. Fitzpatrick’s 5,500+ seats were filled, with flags waving, chants echoing, and families settling in for a night that felt bigger than a regular season game. The Canadian visitors brought grit and truculence, but Portland matched it with spirit and creativity. After the trading of goals and the issuing of several red cards, it was a stoppage-time volley strike that sent the crowd into pure jubilation.

What really made the night special was the atmosphere. Fitzpatrick Stadium has transformed into a true soccer venue with beer stations lined the concourse, food trucks served up Maine favorites, and seating options ranged from general admission stands to the upgraded High-Roller Field Club close to the pitch. Everywhere you looked, fans were enjoying themselves. Fans were wearing jerseys, supporter groups were chanting with drums, and friends catching up over local brews. Janet Mills even made an appearance. It felt less like a single match and more like a festival for the whole city of Portland and state of Maine.

The match was much more than just the final score. It was proof that Portland is hungry for soccer at this level, and that the Hearts of Pine are quickly becoming part of the city’s identity. Nights like this show that Fitzy isn’t just a stadium, it’s a gathering place for a community discovering its voice and it’s love for the beautiful game.
