Hiking Tumbledown Mountain in Weld, Maine

There are few places in Maine that capture the magic of fall quite like Tumbledown Mountain in Weld. On a crisp fall day during peak foliage, we set out for a hike that was as colorful as it was memorable.

The Climb Up Look Trail

We began our adventure on the Look Trail, a steady climb that quickly immersed us in the reds, oranges, and golds of Maine’s fall season. The highlight, and a true rite of passage, was squeezing through Fat Man’s Misery, a narrow rock chimney that’s equal parts challenging and fun. It’s a scramble that tests your balance and your nerves, but once through, the reward awaits just beyond.

Views That Stop You in Your Tracks

Reaching the alpine pond near the summit is always a special moment. On a hot summer day, hikers often plunge into the chilly waters, but with the fall air brisk, we decided to save the swim for another season. Instead, we settled in at the peak with the best trail lunch of all time: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and fresh fruit. Surrounded by fiery foliage stretching to the horizon, and in the company of friends, it was as close to perfect as a hike can get.

The Descent via Brook Trail

After soaking in the views and the sunshine, we began our descent down the Brook Trail, a gentler route that eventually connects to the dirt road leading back to the parking area. The loop made for a moderate and well-rounded hike, enough of a challenge to feel accomplished, but manageable enough to simply enjoy the day.

A Sweet Reward

On the way home, we capped off our adventure with a stop at Sweet Scoops, a local ice cream favorite that turned out to be the perfect “second reward” of the day.

Why You Should Hike Tumbledown
