An Evening on Casco Bay and Dinner at The Dolphin Restaurant

When you have a boat, or are lucky enough to have a friend with one , the coast of Maine opens up in magical ways. Casco Bay, with its hundreds of island, becomes your playground. On any given outing, you might see seals basking on ledges, porpoises darting through the water, sturgeon breaking the surface, or osprey circling overhead. If fortune smiles, even a whale might pass by.

There are endless destinations in the bay: a swim at the Goslings on a hot afternoon, a picnic on a quiet island, or simply a slow cruise taking in the salty air. But few things compare to an evening voyage capped with dinner and a sunset at The Dolphin Restaurant in Harpswell.

The Dolphin Restaurant from the dock

We recently did just that with family and friends, and it was a night to remember. The weather was perfect - warm, clear, and calm. Before dinner, we played lawn games and enjoyed the sweeping ocean views, perhaps sipping a Pain Killer or two while waiting for our table. The food was excellent, fresh seafood prepared the way only a coastal Maine restaurant can. As the sun dipped low, painting the sky in fiery colors, we lingered on the deck before heading back across the bay to Freeport.

Cruising home under a sky streaked with pink and gold, we couldn’t help but think: evenings like this are what Maine summers are all about.
